#26. Korean Colors: Essential Words and How to Use Them

Imagine you are shopping in Myeongdong or browsing for a cute Hanbok, and you want to describe that perfect shade of blue. In English, we just say "Blue sky" or "The sky is blue." In Korean, colors can be a bit more "colorful" in terms of grammar! Some act like nouns, some act like adjectives, and some even change their shape entirely. Don't worry, though—we’re going to paint a clear picture for you. Let’s learn the essential Korean colors and how to use them like a local! 1. The Basic Color Palette In Korean, most color names end with the word 색 (saek) , which literally means "color." When you are just naming the color (like a noun), this is the form you use. #21. Korean Months and Dates: A Complete Beginner’s Guide

Learning how to talk about dates is one of the most practical steps in your Korean language journey. Whether you are booking a hotel, checking a K-pop concert schedule, or making plans with friends, you need to know months and days. The best part? The Korean system for dates is very logical. Once you know your numbers, you already know 90% of the calendar!

1. The Logic of Korean Months

In English, months have unique names like January and February. In Korean, it is much simpler. You just take a Sino-Korean number (1 to 12) and add the word Wol (월), which means month.

Month Korean (Hangeul) Pronunciation
January 1월 Il-wol
February 2월 I-wol
March 3월 Sam-wol
April 4월 Sa-wol
May 5월 O-wol
June 6월 Yu-wol (Not Yuk-wol)

2. Spelling Exceptions You Must Know

Most months follow the number + Wol rule perfectly. However, June (June) and October (October) are slightly different for easier pronunciation. Instead of saying "Yuk-wol," we say Yu-wol. Instead of "Sip-wol," we say Si-wol. This is to make the flow of speech smoother.

Special Pronunciation Guide:
  • June: 6월 (유월) - Yu-wol
  • October: 10월 (시월) - Si-wol

3. Days of the Month (Il)

To say a specific day, you use the Sino-Korean number followed by the word Il (일), which means "day." For example, the 1st is 1일 (Il-il), and the 15th is 15일 (Sibo-il).

When writing the full date in Korean, the order is always: Year + Month + Day. This is the opposite of many Western formats. For example, "May 25th, 2024" becomes "2024년 5월 25일."

4. Essential Date Vocabulary

To have a real conversation, you need more than just numbers. Here are the most common words used when talking about time and schedules in Korea:

  • Oneul (오늘): Today
  • Naeil (내일): Tomorrow
  • Eoje (어제): Yesterday
  • Dalgueok (달력): Calendar
  • Saeng-il (생일): Birthday
PRO TIP

When asking for the date, use the phrase "Myeochwol myeochil ieyo?" (몇월 며칠이에요?). This literally means "Which month and which day is it?" Notice that "myeoch-il" (which day) is written as one word for better phonetic flow!
